A true freedom fighter doesn’t need a certificate

15 ex-freedom fighters recently discovered a historic house in Chandrapur village, Kaliganj upazila where almost five hundred freedom fighters received shelter and training during the Liberation War fifty years ago.

The 15 war veterans, including camp commanders and trainers, visited the house to pay tribute to Izzat Ali Master, the wife of Razia Khatun. Their selfless support and contribution enabled freedom fighters to obtain extensive combat training in India.

To their dismay, war veterans discovered that Izzat Ali Masters, from whom they received their first basic training, was not officially recognized as a freedom fighter. He died in 2006 at the age 79.

Izzat Ali Masters used his house, which was located one-half kilometre from India's border, as a transit camp. He provided food, shelter, and training for new recruits, before they were sent to India to receive warfare training during the 1971 Liberation War of Bangladesh.

Razia Khatun, Izzat Ali’s wife, was responsible for safekeeping their weapons and ammunition during their stay in the house. She also cooked meals every day for around 100-120 freedom fighters and refugees each day, according to Ainul Islam (former commander of the freedom fighters).

He also stated that "Izzat Ali master took part in different operations with us as well."

Moniruzzaman Moni is a freedom fighter and former company commander. He said that around 500 freedom fighters had received their first training from Izzat Al Master before they crossed into India.

After their training in the neighboring country, they returned home to conduct operations within the occupied territory of Pakistani occupation forces. Five of their compatriots were also trained by Izzat Ali Masters and later received the country's fourth highest gallantry award Bir Protik.

"Young recruits from various parts of the country received a basic training course for 15 days at the house before being sent to India. Sirajul Islam, freedom fighter and commander of the camp during wartime, stated that refugees on their way to India would stop at the house for food.

In his lifetime, Izzat Ali Master didn't have any desire to obtain a certificate as a freedom fighter's officer. Razia Khatun is his wife and suffers from old-age complications. The four children, Razia Khatun and her four daughters, are all well-established in their respective professions.

Reaz Uddin (college teacher) said that one of the boys was Reaz. He had told them the history of their house but asked us not share it with anyone else.

He also stated that a true patriot or freedom fighter doesn't need a certificate. However, we would be honored to see our mother or father recognized as freedom fighters.
